THE PERMANENT EQUIPMENT GUIDE

Sorting grapples

Separate and place material around the next step.

Sorting grapples help handle and separate suitable materials in selected excavation and demolition applications. The task and carrier determine the appropriate design.

SELECTION / SCOPE / HANDOVER

Before choosing the equipment

Identify the material mix and what happens after sorting. Ask how the grapple fits the carrier and whether rotation, grip geometry or other features are needed for the proposed work.

What belongs in the quote

Define the sorting standard, stockpile locations and disposal responsibilities. Include setup and attachment support in the quote rather than treating the grapple as an unspecified accessory.

Think about the surrounding work

Ask for the exact carrier and attachment combination. Mounting geometry, attachment mass, hydraulic requirements and the work material all affect suitability. A coupler or tool change can alter the machine configuration; compatibility and operating limits must come from the supplier and manufacturer documentation for that combination.

Three questions for your contractor

  1. Which materials will be handled?
  2. How is the attachment matched to the carrier?
  3. What sorting result is required?

Bring a useful project brief

Bring site photographs, access measurements, available drawings and a description of the finished result. Identify what is known about the ground and existing services, and distinguish confirmed information from assumptions. Ask for written inclusions, exclusions, change procedures and handover records before comparing totals.

Equipment selection and the work method need a qualified contractor familiar with the site. This guide helps frame the brief; it does not replace manufacturer instructions, site assessment or engineering.
