Choose an excavation contractor

A good comparison goes beyond hourly rates. Look for a clear scope, relevant experience, realistic assumptions and a process for handling unknown conditions.

Verify the basics

Confirm the legal business name, licensing where required, liability insurance and worker coverage. Ask for recent, comparable references and permission to verify them directly.

Compare the same scope

Provide each bidder the same plans and information. Check exclusions, allowances, unit prices, mobilization, disposal, imported materials, testing, permits and restoration.

Put changes in writing

The agreement should state payment milestones, responsibilities, schedule assumptions and how extra work is authorized. Keep locate records, photos, tickets, test results and as-builts.

Safety note: Utility locating does not replace safe excavation practice. Requirements differ by location and conditions; use qualified professionals and follow the authority having jurisdiction.

Questions to ask

  • What information or assumptions is this plan based on?
  • Who is responsible for locates, permits, survey control and inspection?
  • What site condition would stop or change the work?
  • How are quantities, changes and disposal documented?
  • What records remain when the work is complete?
