Choose equipment around the work

The biggest machine is not automatically the most productive. Access, reach, lifting needs, underfoot conditions, trucking and finish requirements shape the fleet.

Excavators and compact excavators

Excavators provide reach, digging and attachment versatility. Compact machines suit constrained sites but still need safe clearance, stable ground and realistic production expectations.

Support machines matter

Loaders move and load material; dozers spread and shape; compactors match soil and lift; trucks control export flow. Poor balance between machines creates waiting and extra handling.

Specify attachments

Bucket width and profile, hydraulic breakers, thumbs, grading beams and compaction attachments should match the task and carrier capacity. Confirm underground and overhead restrictions.

Safety note: Utility locating does not replace safe excavation practice. Requirements differ by location and conditions; use qualified professionals and follow the authority having jurisdiction.

Questions to ask

  • What information or assumptions is this plan based on?
  • Who is responsible for locates, permits, survey control and inspection?
  • What site condition would stop or change the work?
  • How are quantities, changes and disposal documented?
