THE PERMANENT EQUIPMENT GUIDE

Excavator grade-control systems

Design information needs reliable site references.

Grade-control and guidance systems help relate machine work to a design or reference. The model, survey control and operator workflow need to be coordinated.

SELECTION / SCOPE / HANDOVER

Before choosing the equipment

Ask who supplies the design data and verifies site control. Discuss compatibility with the machine and what checks remain independent of the onboard display.

What belongs in the quote

Include setup, training, model updates and data handover. Agree how discrepancies between field conditions and the design are escalated before work continues.

Think about the surrounding work

Identify the information, power, water or material flow that supports the main excavation operation. Assign responsibility for setup, checks and records. Support equipment should be planned around site access and the next trade so that a useful machine does not become a bottleneck or leave an undocumented handover.

Three questions for your contractor

  1. Who owns the design model?
  2. How is site control checked?
  3. What happens when the field and model disagree?

Bring a useful project brief

Bring site photographs, access measurements, available drawings and a description of the finished result. Identify what is known about the ground and existing services, and distinguish confirmed information from assumptions. Ask for written inclusions, exclusions, change procedures and handover records before comparing totals.

Equipment selection and the work method need a qualified contractor familiar with the site. This guide helps frame the brief; it does not replace manufacturer instructions, site assessment or engineering.
