Site preparation

A durable project depends on what happens before concrete, paving or landscaping hides the ground. Site preparation turns variable existing conditions into a documented working platform.

A site is a sequence: Clear & strip; Assess the ground; Prepare the platform

Start with controls

Confirm boundaries, benchmarks, protected areas, erosion controls and utility markings. Photograph existing roads, fences and neighboring improvements before traffic begins.

Build from competent material

Organic soil, debris and soft pockets generally cannot support structural fill. The project specifications or geotechnical professional should guide proofing, undercutting, moisture conditioning and lift thickness.

Protect the prepared surface

Keep water from ponding, limit unnecessary traffic and repair rutting before the next trade arrives. Record imported material, test locations and final elevations.

Safety note: Utility locating does not replace safe excavation practice. Requirements differ by location and conditions; use qualified professionals and follow the authority having jurisdiction.

Questions to ask

  • What information or assumptions is this plan based on?
  • Who is responsible for locates, permits, survey control and inspection?
  • What site condition would stop or change the work?
  • How are quantities, changes and disposal documented?
  • What records remain when the work is complete?
