THE PERMANENT EQUIPMENT GUIDE

Padfoot rollers

Drum geometry belongs in the soil discussion.

Padfoot rollers use a projecting drum surface and are selected for suitable soil-compaction applications. Soil condition and the specified earthworks method matter more than the equipment label alone.

SELECTION / SCOPE / HANDOVER

Before choosing the equipment

Ask who assesses the fill and controls its placement condition. Describe restricted areas and transitions where another machine or method may be required.

What belongs in the quote

The proposal should allocate material preparation, rolling and testing responsibilities. Agree how unsuitable fill and weather-related changes will be managed.

Think about the surrounding work

Compaction planning should start with the specified material, placement conditions and acceptance requirements. Ask who sets the method and who records the result. Machine selection, access and quality testing need to be coordinated with the earthworks sequence; the finished surface alone does not establish that the underlying work meets the project requirements.

Three questions for your contractor

  1. Who confirms suitability for the fill?
  2. How are material conditions controlled?
  3. What happens when acceptance tests fail?

Bring a useful project brief

Bring site photographs, access measurements, available drawings and a description of the finished result. Identify what is known about the ground and existing services, and distinguish confirmed information from assumptions. Ask for written inclusions, exclusions, change procedures and handover records before comparing totals.

Equipment selection and the work method need a qualified contractor familiar with the site. This guide helps frame the brief; it does not replace manufacturer instructions, site assessment or engineering.
