Treat marks as a starting point

Locate requests, plans and visible features should be reconciled on site. Marks have limits; positively expose existing services using accepted methods before crossing or working close.

Coordinate the installation

Confirm approved materials, separation, depth, crossings, thrust restraint, bedding, warning tape or tracer wire, testing and inspection hold points before work starts.

Create a useful record

Capture measurements from permanent features, depths, connections and crossings before backfill. Accurate as-built information reduces risk on the next project.

Safety note: Utility locating does not replace safe excavation practice. Requirements differ by location and conditions; use qualified professionals and follow the authority having jurisdiction.

Questions to ask

  • What information or assumptions is this plan based on?
  • Who is responsible for locates, permits, survey control and inspection?
  • What site condition would stop or change the work?
  • How are quantities, changes and disposal documented?
  • What records remain when the work is complete?
