Trenching safely and accurately

A trench can become hazardous without warning. Depth is only one factor; soil, water, surcharge loads, nearby traffic and previous disturbance all affect the plan.

Locate before excavation

Contact the local utility-locate service and allow the required response time. Review marks with records, surface features and the owner. Use an approved exposure method in the tolerance zone.

Use a competent safety plan

A qualified person should assess conditions and select sloping, benching, shoring or shielding as local rules require. Keep spoil, materials and equipment back from the edge and provide safe access.

Control bedding and backfill

Use specified bedding, maintain line and grade, and place backfill in suitable lifts. Protect pipe or conduit from point loading and document crossings before covering.

Safety note: Utility locating does not replace safe excavation practice. Requirements differ by location and conditions; use qualified professionals and follow the authority having jurisdiction.
