Excavation safety essentials

Cave-ins, buried utilities, mobile equipment, water and unstable edges can cause severe harm. This overview supports better questions; it is not a protective-system design or site safety plan.

Assign qualified responsibility

The employer and qualified site personnel must apply the rules in the local jurisdiction. Conditions should be inspected as required and whenever weather, vibration, soil or site activity changes.

Control the excavation zone

Keep people clear of swing radii and suspended loads. Provide barricades, safe access and traffic control. Manage water and keep spoil, vehicles and materials away from edges as required.

Stop when conditions change

Unknown utilities, cracking, sloughing, bulging, water entry, unusual odors or movement warrant stopping work, clearing the hazard area and reassessing.

Safety note: Utility locating does not replace safe excavation practice. Requirements differ by location and conditions; use qualified professionals and follow the authority having jurisdiction.

Questions to ask

  • What information or assumptions is this plan based on?
  • Who is responsible for locates, permits, survey control and inspection?
  • What site condition would stop or change the work?
  • How are quantities, changes and disposal documented?
  • What records remain when the work is complete?
