Grading turns design into drainage

Good grading connects elevations across foundations, pavements, yards and outlets while maintaining suitable material beneath finished surfaces.

Work from reliable control

Use an established benchmark and current plans. Confirm critical elevations at doors, foundation walls, catch basins, pavement tie-ins and property edges.

Manage material and moisture

Material that is too wet, dry, organic or oversized may not compact as intended. Place suitable fill in controlled lifts and test where the design or authority requires.

Check the whole path

A local slope is not enough. Follow the path to a lawful outlet, looking for flat spots, abrupt transitions and runoff directed toward buildings or neighbors.

Safety note: Utility locating does not replace safe excavation practice. Requirements differ by location and conditions; use qualified professionals and follow the authority having jurisdiction.

Questions to ask

  • What information or assumptions is this plan based on?
  • Who is responsible for locates, permits, survey control and inspection?
  • What site condition would stop or change the work?
  • How are quantities, changes and disposal documented?
  • What records remain when the work is complete?
