Drainage starts with diagnosis

Water at the low point does not reveal where the problem begins. Observe the site during rain and determine whether water is surface runoff, groundwater, a leaking service or roof discharge.

Map the water path

Record high and low points, downspouts, hard surfaces, neighboring runoff, seasonal changes and the proposed outlet. Verify that discharge is lawful and will not shift harm elsewhere.

Match the intervention

Regrading can address surface flow. Swales collect broad runoff; solid pipe conveys collected water; properly designed subsurface drains intercept water in soil. Each needs a stable outlet and maintenance access.

Verify performance

Before covering work, check elevations, fittings, cleanouts, filter materials and outlet protection. Photograph the installation and keep a simple plan for future owners.

Safety note: Utility locating does not replace safe excavation practice. Requirements differ by location and conditions; use qualified professionals and follow the authority having jurisdiction.

Questions to ask

  • What information or assumptions is this plan based on?
  • Who is responsible for locates, permits, survey control and inspection?
  • What site condition would stop or change the work?
  • How are quantities, changes and disposal documented?
  • What records remain when the work is complete?
