Start with the water, not the trench

A drain installed without understanding the source and outlet can move the symptom, saturate another area or demand endless maintenance.

Observe during rain

Note when water appears, how quickly it recedes and whether it flows on the surface or seeps from the soil. Check roof leaders, pavement edges, irrigation and neighboring grades.

Measure elevations

Even a simple level survey can reveal flat zones and blocked flow. For critical work, use qualified survey or design support and confirm outlet elevation before excavation.

Design for maintenance

Inlets collect debris, pipes can sediment and outlets can erode or freeze. Provide accessible cleanouts and inspection points, then keep an as-built sketch.

Safety note: Utility locating does not replace safe excavation practice. Requirements differ by location and conditions; use qualified professionals and follow the authority having jurisdiction.

Questions to ask

  • What information or assumptions is this plan based on?
  • Who is responsible for locates, permits, survey control and inspection?
  • What site condition would stop or change the work?
  • How are quantities, changes and disposal documented?
  • What records remain when the work is complete?
